Facts - Did you Know?

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Canada states:

  • 1 in 5 people will have a mental illness and 20% of those diagnosed will also have a drug addiction problem.

World Drug Report 2008 (produced by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime):

  • Cannabis is consumed by close to 166 million people and continues to be the most prevalent of all illegal drugs used worldwide.

AADAC reported the following:

  • During the 2007-2008 fiscal year, 63%, or 19,303 of AADAC's 30,498 clients (15,451 over 18 years of age at admission and 3,852 under 18 years of age at admission) identified drugs other than alcohol and tobacco as one of their reasons for seeking out AADAC related services
  • Those that received treatment:
    11% were aged 15 or younger, 9% were aged 16 or 17, 19% were aged 18 to 24, 60% were aged 25 to 54, and 2% were aged 55 or older.
 

According to the 2008 Canadian Alcohol and Drug Use Monitoring Survey:

  • The rate of drug use by youth 15-24 years of age remains much higher than that reported by adults 25 years and older: four times higher for cannabis use (32.7% versus 7.3%), and nine times higher for past-year use of any other illicit drug (15.4% versus 1.7%).
  • The prevalence of harm experienced during the past year due to one's drug use was approximately ten times higher among youth 15-24 years of age, than among adults aged 25 and older (10.8% versus 1.1%).
  • The prevalence of use of illicit drugs in 2008 by youth 15 to 24 years of age at 32.7% was more than four times higher than the rate of 7.3% for adults 25 years and older.
  • In 2008, 12.1% of Canadians used at least one of six drugs (including cannabis, cocaine or crack, speed, ecstasy, hallucinogens or heroin)
