Medical Detoxification Services
Detoxification (detox) is a medical alcohol and drug rehab program designed to stabilize individuals who have consumed mood-altering substances at toxic levels. Medical alcohol and drug detox programs are designed primarily to treat the physical aspects of drug dependency.
Withdrawal from alcohol or drugs can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms ranging from nausea to seizures. Since withdrawal can result in potentially life-threatening medical complications, around the clock supervision by medical staff is recommended. This can include medication management, detoxification and harm reduction programs.
The length of stay in an alcohol and drug detox program varies but is typically 7-10 days. Longer stays in detox may be required if large doses opioids or alcohol are involved or if there are other medical conditions.
The Thorpe Recovery Centre detox program focuses on both the medical consequences of compulsive drug and alcohol use as well as the psychological components of addiction and mental health. The program includes daily meetings with a registered psychologist offering skills and techniques that help clients to deal with emotional, relational and cognitive problems in their lives. Clients are offered one-to-one counselling opportunities daily as well as working in a group, gaining support from peers who are experiencing many of the same difficulties in their lives.
